Al-Sisi Calls for Islamic Reform
In a major positive development, Egypt's President Al Sisi has made a strong plea for a "religious revolution" in Islam. Speaking at Al Azhar University in Cairo, Sisi urged Islamic scholars to discredit Islamists:
"I say and repeat again that we are in need of a religious revolution. You, imams, are responsible before Allah. The entire world, I say it again, the entire world is waiting for your next move... because this umma is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost – and it is being lost by our own hands."
While his statement lacks details (wherein the devil resides) it may still be viewed as a good beginning by Muslim reformists such as Salim Mansur. Less favourably impressed will be Muslim Brotherhood supporter Wael Haddara and many of his ilk in the London Muslim Mosque. To Westerners who recognize the potentially existential threat posed by Islamists around the globe, it is indeed encouraging to hear that the leader of a major Muslim-majority country shares their concerns.
